of Joy / Meet the
New Doc
Headlines and half-page photos, extolling the office’s kid-friendly atmosphere, ran in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in August. The same article was subsequently reprinted in several newspapers across the country, among them the Daily Oklahoman, Kansas City Star, Wichita Eagle, Reno Gazette-Journal, Miami Herald, Santa Fe New Mexican, San Antonio Light, El Paso Times, and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. The emphasis of the article was on creating a child-friendly environment in a medical office. The story specifically showcased our office for treating children with respect, care, and a special touch. Dr. Weiner’s concern for the well being of the child was captured when he remarked that during any dental procedure, "the child is more important than the tooth."
Pediatric Dentistry, the national children’s dental journal, also spotlighted the high level of dental care in our office. The journal published research, gathered from our files, documenting the office’s success with a new technique for treating decay that invades the dental pulp (nerve). These research findings were compiled by a Baylor University pediatric dental resident who studied our patient treatment and follow-up records. Her findings, presented at a national dental meeting, won the Ralph McDonald Award for best research from a pediatric dental resident. Dr.
Weiner spoke about this technique, and
others used in the practice, at a pediatric
dental meeting in Colorado.
Locally, he made a similar presentation
at the Fort Worth District Dental Society’s
annual Table Clinic gathering where he
was awarded a First Place trophy.
He also recently authored an article soon
to be published in Pediatric Dentistry and was also
featured in Pediatric Dentistry Today, the newsletter of the
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The office’s extended family tree increased by three with the birth of a trio of babies over the past 15 months. Dr. Debbie Graham’s daughter, Emma, arrived August 28, 2000. She weighed in at 8 lb., 11 oz. and has grown to 23 pounds. Emma’s nanny is Heather Bartko, formerly the office receptionist. Heather left her front desk job to tend to both Emma and to her five-year-old son, Mitch. With her strong ties to the practice, Heather, too, remains part of the office family.
The newest bundle of joy is Alexandria Layne Reaves, born October 21. Ally is the 7-lb., 4- oz. daughter of office manager Sherry Reaves. Sherry, who has been with the office for 18 years, has continued working from home via a modem. She plans to return to the office in the near future.
Dr. Plocheck practices in Fort Worth on Thursday and Friday. She also practices part-time in a Dallas office. Dr. Plocheck, who likes shopping for antiques, is active in The Junior League of Dallas.
We try to bring your children the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art dental care. The office now has a Diagnodent, a laser instrument for diagnosing cavities and the depth of decay which forms in the grooves of the molars. The office is also using a computer assisted anesthetic delivery system, designed to minimize discomfort when treating decay. Last but not least, the office utilizes a fluorimeter to help determine the level of fluoride in drinking water. This is helpful for families who live in more rural areas where the fluoride level of the drinking water is not readily available. This analysis helps us prescribe the appropriate fluoride supplement for optimum decay prevention.

My 87-year-old father, Max, moved to Fort Worth this summer from the Washington, D.C. area, fulfilling his lifelong dream to live out West. He and his 14-year-old border collie, Buddy, are happy to be Texans. My
wife, Hollace, and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary
in June. Hollace, a published author and historian,
has returned to school at UT Arlington where she is
pursuing a masters degree in Texas history. Her book, Jewish
Stars in Texas, published by Texas A&M University Press,
is in its second printing.
Our son, Mark, was married this summer to a wonderful young lady from Louisiana. Mark, a third generation Air Force officer, is stationed in Wichita, Kansas. A navigator on the KC-135 aircraft, he is currently participating in Operation Enduring Freedom. Mark was recently promoted to captain. Our daughter, Dawn, who formerly worked in the office after school as a scrub tech, now works in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she is a business writer for Dow Jones. From our family to yours, may the coming year bring you peace, health and happiness.

Dr.
Weiner’s dental practice received
extraordinary recognition this year in
the daily press and in professional
journals. 
Our
practice has always prided itself in maintaining the highest
level of communication with patients, parents, and staff.
To facilitate communication, a noted child psychologist, Sy
Ogulnick of Reno, Nevada, has visited the office semi-annually
since 1981 to conduct staff seminars.
Dental
Assistant Julie Dusza took maternity
leave over the summer for the birth of
her first child, Alec. A healthy
eight-pound baby boy, he was born May
17. Julie had initially planned to be
a full-time mom, but missed the office
family. In September, she made
child care arrangements and returned to
her chair-side dental assisting job.
Dr.
Janell Plocheck joined our practice in July 2000. A Houston-area
native, she is a graduate of Texas A&M University
and Baylor College of Dentistry. Dr. Plocheck completed
her pediatric dental residency at Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland, Ohio. The head of that program
was among Dr. Weiner’s favorite professors and closest
colleagues when he himself was a dental resident at
the University of Maryland. The Cleveland dean contacted
Dr. Weiner to highly recommend Dr. Plocheck, who
was eager to return to Texas.
